They made it up to the room and quickly got ready for bed, pleasantly exhausted by their day together. They had both stripped, but just as Janie was about to slip under the covers, Rafe’s voice called out to her from the bathroom. “Forgetting something, my good little patient?”

It took her a second before it dawned on her. Oh, shit.

“I see that you’re remembering now, aren’t you?” He was now directly behind her and he wrapped his arms around her, planting a quick kiss on her cheek. “Assume the position, Janie. That’s it… be a good girl for me.”

She grabbed a couple of pillows and adopted the position she’d used earlier in the day, exposing herself to his watchful gaze.

“Perfect, just perfect.” After spreading her open and applying Vaseline to her sore bottom, he pushed the greased thermometer into her, and she felt light pressure as he held it in firmly. She turned her head to meet his gaze and they spent the next five minutes in silence, staring into each other’s eyes as if trying to absorb the magnitude of everything they’d shared over the course of the day.

“Time’s up, my sweet girl.” He slid the thermometer out. “And look at that. No temperature.” He kissed her and cleaned up the supplies before returning to bed.

Lights out, bodies curled together under the sheets, Janie spent her last few moments of conscious thought wondering if it was possible to fall in love with a man she had just met.

She was pretty sure she already knew the answer.
